Sheriff Jimmy Harris states as follows:

On December 28th Alabama Law Enforcement Agency did a traffic stop at mile marker 205 on Interstate 59, the driver seemed to be under the influence of an unknown substance. The DeKalb County K-9 unit was called to assist with the stop. When deputies arrived at the scene our new K-9 Marianna searched around the vehicle and found an unknown substance. Yerai Sanchez Oliveras, 35 of Cartersville, Georgia stated that the substance was called Kratom, a newly rated illegal drug that was outlawed this past year. At which time the DeKalb County Drug and Major Crimes Unit was called and when they arrived the confirmed that the substance was Kratom. Oliveras was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and DUI.

On the same date in a different incident DeKalb County K-9 unit did a traffic violation stop on County Road 391 in the Geraldine area. When Geraldine Police Officer came to assist Deputies asked the driver and passenger to step out of the vehicle, when the passenger Scotty Potter, 34 of Crossville stepped out of the vehicle a plastic baggie fell out. At which time they searched the vehicle and found approximately 15 grams methamphetamine ICE, a syringe and other illegal prescription pills. Both Nicholas Childress, 33 of the Whitten area and Scotty Lee Potter were arrested. The DeKalb County Drug and Major Crimes Unit was notified and both subjects was charged with Distribution of Controlled Substance, Illegal Possession of Prescription Drugs, and Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance.

Sheriff Harris says “Marianna is our newest K-9 with handler being Deputy Akins and they just got back from training in North Carolina after retiring K-9 Yogi. Marianna, Deputies, Geraldine Police Officers, and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency did a great job on making these arrest.”
